Living Sovereignty: Sustaining Indigenous Autonomy in "Indian Territory" Kansas

August 31 - October 28

The power of sovereignty, or the right to self-rule, is an ongoing struggle for indigenous people of the North America. This display, created by the Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence, Kansas, follows the history of the indigenous people of Kansas as the western border of the United States pushed into that region in the nineteenth century and spread beyond it. Follow these nations’ stories and their fight for tribal self-governance within an increasingly homogenized American society.
